Heads up, Carter County because one of the busiest weekends of the summer is finally here because it’s time for the Route 60 Yard Sale. This annual event rolls through our region beginning today and running through Saturday, 2nd inviting bargain hunters, treasure seekers, and families to set up shop or scour for deals along State Route 60 through Carter, Boyd, Rowan, and beyond.
It’s always a fun weekend filled with unique finds and great community spirit—but it also means a big increase in traffic right here at home. Locals and visitors alike are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians stepping out to shop or set up their sales.
Whether you’re out there hunting for a hidden gem or just driving through—keep your eyes open, be patient, and let’s make this a safe and successful Route 60 weekend for everyone.

Help is available to keep the cool air flowing this summer with the summer heat cranking up, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program—better known as LIHEAP—is once again stepping in to help Kentucky residents stay safe and cool.
The LIHEAP Summer Subsidy Program kicks off July 28 and runs through September 12, 2025, offering one-time electric bill assistance to income-eligible households. This benefit doesn’t require a past-due or disconnect notice and can be applied as a credit to your utility account.
To qualify, you must be responsible for your home’s electric costs and fall within the program’s income guidelines. For example, a family of four can earn up to $4,019 a month and still be eligible.
When applying, bring: Social Security cards or Permanent Resident Cards for each household member, proof of all income for the previous month, and your most recent electric bill or a statement from your landlord if utilities are included in rent.
You can apply at your local Community Action Agency—there’s one in every nearby county, including at 539 Hitchins Avenue in Olive Hill. Boyd, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence counties are also taking applications.

East Carter fans — it’s almost time to kick off the season in style and you’re invited to the First Down Dinner on Saturday, August 16th from 6 to 8 PM at the First Baptist Church Life Center.
This special evening will honor Raider football alumni and introduce this year’s players, with Coach Garry McPeek as the special guest speaker. It’s a great night for fans, families, and the whole East Carter community to rally together before the season begins.

Today marks the final opportunity this week for residents in Western Carter County to take advantage of the county-wide clean-up campaign, as dumpsters will be available at the Carter County Maintenance Garage along US 60 until 2:30 p.m. The Solid Waste Department reminds all participants that dumpster access has now returned to its regular three-day weekly schedule and urges the public to follow the updated disposal guidelines.
A number of items will not be accepted, including refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, and batteries. In addition, all items must be either bagged or boxed — loose trash will not be collected.
The Carter County Clean-Up campaign operates on a rotating schedule, providing disposal opportunities for both the eastern and western ends of the county. After today’s event, dumpsters will return to the maintenance garage in Grayson from August 6th through the 8th.
This valuable community service is made possible by the Carter County Solid Waste Department, who continue to support these efforts to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and beautiful.
