As everyone should be aware of by now the consolidation of Carter County Schools – which will transform East and West Carter High Schools into a state of the art facility for our county’s students – is well underway. At the end of November our district held a groundbreaking and ribbon cutting at the location which will house the new facilities off of West US 60, that will finally see our high school campus and Career and Technical Center rest at the same location.
A fun and exciting portion of the process was recently up on the docket in which the Carter County High School Branding Committee tasked the students and community to submit their suggestions for the combined school’s mascot and colors. Now that the deadline has passed and the submissions have been tabulated the final number came in at over 1100. Of those there were over 50 unique mascot names and numerous color combinations submitted. Some of the top mascot submittals included the Coyotes, Bats, Rangers, Colonels, Thunder, Aces, Copperheads, and many more. Top colors included Blue, purple, black, white, gold, red, and silver.
Next up the Branding Committee will meet several times to review submissions and narrow the focus to create a list of mascot and color finalists. It is anticipated that a public vote will take place in February to make the final mascot and color decisions.
In more news from Carter County Schools, our students, faculty, and staff continue to observe their Christmas and New Year holiday break. Classrooms will remain vacant through the date of Tuesday, January 7th. Representatives from our school district look forward to getting back into the classroom and kicking off a productive 2025 school year.

With the cold weather here to stay throughout the Bluegrass state the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has released their annual winter’s guide to help motorists prepare and stay safe on the roadways. Most recently they offered up the advice to keep your gas tank full which will help prevent ice buildup and in turn keep your engine from freezing. Temperature changes are known to cause moisture which collects in the gas tank and may freeze – but the KYTC reminders Kentucky motorists that a full tank leaves no room for ice and just might keep your engine safe.

We would like to remind everyone about the ongoing Fostering Possibilities initiative that works diligently to provide for those in need. The program works with the selfless mission to provide new clothing and other resources to local foster children along with children in kinship placements. This is done to help foster a feeling of self-esteem and belonging in the children during a difficult time of change in their lives.
The Fostering Possibilities boutique is located at 310 Carol Malone Blvd in Grayson, and is accepting any and all donations from generous members of the community to help them better serve the foster youth of Carter County. All donations help stock the boutique location to allow the initiative to serve one child at a time. Officials with the program want everyone to know that any amount – no matter how small – can help make a huge difference towards this mission. Today will see dumpster availability open to the East end of the county at the Maintenance Garage located in Grayson. Dumpsters will be open today between the hours of 8am and 2:30pm but due to the weather and cold temperatures there may not be any assistance on site to help you unload your vehicle.
The County Clean-Up has now extended their list of non-accepted items to include: refrigerators, deep freezers, or televisions that’s along with household garbage, paint, tires, and batteries – please note that none of these items will be collected. All garbage must also be bagged or boxed with no loose items being collected. The campaign is offered by the Carter County Solid Waste Department, and sees dumpsters made available at the county maintenance garages for community use.
The county clean-up campaign works on a rotating schedule and offers opportunities for both Eastern and Western Carter County. Following their stay today they will be returning to the West end of the county Wednesday through Friday of next week. That’s the dates of January 15th through the 17th.
