A heads up for our listening area as we head into the weekend — a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through 7:00 Monday morning, January 26th, as a major winter storm system moves toward the region.
Forecasters say significant winter weather is expected, but there is still some uncertainty about how the storm will play out. Snowfall is almost a certainty, though freezing rain and sleet could mix in at times, which could make travel conditions especially hazardous and lead to possible power outages.
Emergency officials are urging residents to stay informed and begin preparing now. That includes checking the latest forecasts, adjusting weekend plans if necessary, and making sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially if power or internet service is interrupted.
Before the storm arrives, officials recommend bringing pets indoors, ensuring they have fresh water, and checking in on elderly neighbors or family members who may need assistance. Stock up on essential supplies, medications, and batteries, and plan to limit travel once conditions deteriorate.
During the storm, drivers are asked to only travel if absolutely necessary. If you use alternative heat sources, be sure they are properly ventilated, and keep generators at least twenty feet away from your home to prevent carbon monoxide exposure. When shoveling snow, take frequent breaks and don’t overexert yourself.
The City of Grayson and Grayson Emergency Management say they will open a powered shelter for anyone who needs a warm place to stay during the storm. However, those planning to use the shelter should be aware that transportation to the site will be their own responsibility.
Officials also encourage residents to stay connected with local updates throughout the weekend, as conditions and forecasts may change.

As part of the America 250 Kentucky initiative, a January Statewide Food Drive is being held across the Commonwealth, encouraging Kentuckians to serve their communities through food donations.
Locally, the Business Cultivation Foundation is hosting a food drive in Grayson, with donations benefiting the Daily Bread Food Pantry. Organizers say the goal is to help stock pantry shelves during the winter months, when demand for food assistance is often at its highest.
Community members are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, including soup, canned vegetables, shelf-stable milk, and beef jerky.
Donations will be accepted from January 12 through January 24, at 200 North Carol Malone Boulevard in Grayson.
Those who would like to participate are invited to drop off donations during the collection period and help make a difference for local families in need.

Today marks the final opportunity this week for residents in Eastern Carter County to take advantage of the county-wide clean-up campaign, as dumpsters will be available at the Carter County Maintenance Garage in Grayson until 2:30 p.m. The Solid Waste Department reminds all participants that dumpster access has now returned to its regular three-day weekly schedule and urges the public to follow the updated disposal guidelines.
A number of items will not be accepted, including refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, and batteries. In addition, all items must be either bagged or boxed — loose trash will not be collected.
The Carter County Clean-Up campaign operates on a rotating schedule, providing disposal opportunities for both the eastern and western ends of the county. After today’s event, dumpsters will return to the maintenance garage on US 60 from January 28th through the 30th.
