As we head into Independence Day weekend, communities all across Carter County are preparing to celebrate America’s birthday in a big way. This year is especially meaningful as our nation marks its 250th anniversary, and from one end of the county to the other, organizations, businesses, churches, and volunteers have come together to make sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Whether you’re looking for hometown parades, live music, family activities, great food, or spectacular fireworks, Carter County has no shortage of opportunities to celebrate close to home. We’ll begin in Olive Hill, where the community is preparing for a full day of patriotic festivities on Saturday.
The day begins early with a pancake breakfast hosted by Olive Hill First Christian Church from 7:30 until 10:30 in the morning. Beginning at 10 o’clock, festivities continue with inflatables for children, local vendors, live artistry, and even a live chainsaw carving demonstration. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can browse booths, enjoy local entertainment, and soak up the community atmosphere.
Later in the day, parade participants will begin lining up at Olive Hill Elementary School before the annual Homecoming Parade steps off at 6:00 p.m. Live music from What’s Up Betsy and Sasha Collette and the Magnolias will keep the celebration going into the evening before fireworks cap off the night’s festivities at dusk. This year’s Homecoming theme, “Stars, Stripes, and 250 Years of Freedom,” honors America’s 250th anniversary while celebrating hometown pride and community spirit.
While you’re in Olive Hill, another stop worth making is the Olive Hill Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is celebrating its fifth anniversary this weekend with special activities, refreshments, prize giveaways, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate one of the community’s most popular destinations. It’s another reminder of the important role local organizations play in welcoming visitors and preserving Carter County’s unique history and heritage.
Moving on to Grayson, Independence Day celebrations continue throughout the day with several exciting events planned. One of the newest celebrations returns to East Main Street as DJMJ Entertainment presents Stars, Stripes and Southern Nights. Beginning at 5:00 p.m., families are invited to bring lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of free live entertainment featuring Landon Shepherd, Rick Potter, The Drifting Union, and headlining act Dustin Burchett and Kentucky Clear. The evening begins with the National Anthem and continues until fireworks begin later that night, making it a perfect gathering place for music lovers and families alike.
Just a short distance away, another Grayson tradition returns as Tres Hermanos Nunez hosts its annual Independence Day celebration. The family-friendly event will feature inflatable games for children, a mechanical bull, music, food, drinks, and activities throughout the evening before concluding with one of the area’s largest fireworks displays. Sponsored by Tres Hermanos Nunez and coordinated with the City of Grayson, the Grayson Tourism Commission, and the Grayson Fire Department, organizers say this year’s fireworks display will stretch nearly 200 yards across the sky. The show is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m., and visitors are encouraged to gather at Tres Hermanos for the best view while supporting the local business that proudly makes the annual display possible.
No matter where you choose to celebrate, one thing is clear. Independence Day in Carter County isn’t just about fireworks. It’s about neighbors coming together, supporting local businesses, enjoying hometown traditions, and creating memories with family and friends.
