UK King’s Daughters has announced its official schedule for free sports physicals for local student athletes ahead of the 2025 school year. The program is open to Kentucky students ages 13 to 19 and is designed to ensure young athletes are cleared and ready for participation in school sports. No appointment is required, and parents or guardians are not required to be present. However, they must complete and sign all required physical forms in ink prior to the event. Physicals will be conducted by licensed athletic trainers and orthopedic staff from KDMC.
The first session will take place today at East Carter High School, with physicals available from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Following today’s offering at East Carter, an open date for all Kentucky high school athletes ages 13 to 19 will be held on Friday, July 11th from 9 to 12 noon at the UK King’s Daughters Medical Pavilion at 2000 Ashland Drive in Russell. All required sports physical forms can be found by scanning a QR code on the event’s official flyer.

The Carter County Poetry Society, in partnership with Holler Down The Holler, is inviting the public to an evening of spoken word and creativity as part of this year’s Memory Days festivities in Grayson.
The 2025 Memory Days Poetry Slam will take place on Thursday, May 22, beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the Grayson Gallery and Art Center, located at 301 East Third Street. The event is completely free to both attend and participate.
Local poets of all experience levels are encouraged to join the fun — but they’ll need to bring their strongest verses and boldest performances, as cash prizes will be awarded to the top three poets of the night. Winners will be selected based on audience votes, making crowd engagement a key part of the competition.
Organizers are hoping for a strong turnout and a lively evening of verse, art, and community. Whether you’re stepping up to the mic or coming just to listen, all are welcome to take part in this unique celebration of local talent.

After the recent string of inclement weather that has swept through the Commonwealth, FEMA has posted a public notice online announcing its intent to provide financial assistance throughout the state. This assistance is aiming to support Kentucky survivors who experienced loss as the result of Feb. 14 – March 7 severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides and mudslides.
This notice applies to the Individual Assistance, Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation grants programs implemented under the authority of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. This public notice concerns activities that may affect historic properties, activities that are located in or affect wetland areas and the 100-year floodplain, and activities that may involve critical actions within the 500-year floodplain.
This newly posted notice follows Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear issuing his own comments in an update following severe storms that brought flooding damage across the Bluegrass State. In those comments Governor Beshear said “Four days of severe storms have brought devastation to communities across the commonwealth.” Before continuing to say “While the threat of severe storms has ended, several rivers and creeks remain at or above flood stage and roadways remain under water in several areas. So we need folks to remain cautious.”

Today marks the final opportunity this week for residents in Eastern Carter County to take advantage of the county-wide clean-up campaign, as dumpsters will be available at the Carter County Maintenance Garage in Grayson until 2:30 p.m. The Solid Waste Department reminds all participants that dumpster access has now returned to its regular three-day weekly schedule and urges the public to follow the updated disposal guidelines.
A number of items will not be accepted, including refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, and batteries. In addition, all items must be either bagged or boxed — loose trash will not be collected.
The Carter County Clean-Up campaign operates on a rotating schedule, providing disposal opportunities for both the eastern and western ends of the county. After today’s event, dumpsters will return to the maintenance garage along US 60 in Olive Hill from May 7th through May 9th.
