Those interested in becoming a lifeguard at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park will need one key requirement — lifeguard certification — and an upcoming class in the region can help make that happen.
The Ashland YMCA will host lifeguard certification classes on February 20th, 21st, and 22nd. Completing the certification is the first step toward qualifying for lifeguard positions at Greenbo Lake for the summer season.
Organizers say additional details about available lifeguard positions will be released as plans are finalized, but those interested in getting certified are encouraged to act now.

Morehead State University’s Space Science Center is receiving a major boost that will expand opportunities for students and strengthen the region’s role in future space missions.
The center has been awarded 7.54 million dollars in Community Project Funding, secured by U.S. Representative Hal Rogers. University officials say the funding will allow students to continue advancing aerospace education and engineering efforts in partnership with NASA and private space science companies.
The announcement comes as NASA has selected Morehead State to help track the historic Artemis II mission, which is currently scheduled for launch in March. Artemis II will mark the first crewed mission in NASA’s Artemis program, sending astronauts around the moon as part of preparations for future lunar landings.
This latest funding builds on earlier federal support. In 2024, the Space Science Center received 10 million dollars to upgrade its two space tracking stations, enhancing the university’s ability to support government and commercial space programs and strengthening the region’s role in the deep space network.
Those upgrades proved critical last year when MSU students and faculty assisted in restoring communications during a public-private lunar mission involving the Odysseus lander.
With the new funding, the university plans to expand its Mission Operations Center to support multiple space-based payload operations at the same time, further positioning students to take part in national and commercial aerospace projects — all from Eastern Kentucky.

Kentucky families facing heating emergencies this winter may qualify for help through the LIHEAP Winter Crisis Program, which runs from January 6th through March 27th, 2026.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program—known as LIHEAP—provides emergency help to households struggling to keep their homes warm during the colder months. Eligible Kentucky households with income at or below 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines may receive assistance if they are experiencing a heating crisis.
The program can help cover heating costs for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil, with payments made directly to the energy provider. To apply, households must show proof of a crisis, such as a disconnect notice, past-due bill, or eviction notice related to heating costs.
Officials say receiving help through other LIHEAP programs earlier in the season does not affect eligibility for the Winter Crisis component. However, assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, so residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
