It’s almost time to head back to class—and Carter County is kicking things off in style.
The Back to School Fall Kickoff is happening Monday, August 4th from 10am to 2pm at Olive Hill Elementary School, and it’s a can’t-miss event for families in the district.
Students from Olive Hill Elementary, Tygart Creek Elementary, Carter City Elementary, West Carter Middle, and West Carter High School are invited to come out and get a jump start on the new school year. There’ll be school supplies, resource booths from local businesses, churches, and agencies—and even free haircuts courtesy of Retro Salon and Hair by Charity.
This event is all about supporting our students and helping every kid start the year off strong and confident. So come out, stock up, and celebrate the return to school with your community.

The event runs from 11am to 2pm at the Mountwest Center for Culinary Arts, located at 1648 8th Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. Representatives will be on hand to talk about open positions, answer questions, and help you start your career with one of the leading names in the industry.

Don’t forget that Carter County Schools is once again stepping up to make sure no child goes hungry this summer. The district’s Summer Meals Program will run from through August 1, providing free meals to students across the county—even while school is out.
Open to all children, the program offers both dine-in and drive-thru options to make access as easy as possible for busy families. Meals will be served Monday through Friday until that August 1st deadline. Dine-in locations include: East Carter Middle School and West Carter High School, with drive-thru options available at Olive Hill Elementary School and Prichard Elementary School however please note that all drive-thru participants must be in line by 1:00 P.M.
This program reflects the very best of Carter County—neighbors helping neighbors, and volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure our children stay healthy, fed, and cared for during the summer months.

Get ready for some fresh fun because Kid’s Day is coming soon to both the Olive Hill and Grayson Farmer’s Markets—and it’s a great chance for kids to learn, play, and shop local.
At each Kid’s Day, children can take part in a few fun activities and earn “Kid’s Bucks”—tokens they can use to buy fresh fruits and veggies directly from market vendors! It’s a hands-on way to encourage healthy habits and support local growers.
Olive Hill’s Kid’s Day kicks things off today from 3 to 4 PM at the Save-a-Lot parking lot, 131 Jessica Lane. Then, Grayson’s Kid’s Day follows on Thursday, July 31st, also from 3 to 4 PM, at the UK Cooperative Extension Office on 94 Fairground Drive.
