Seniors in Carter County will soon have an opportunity to receive assistance purchasing fresh, locally grown food through a statewide program.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is offering eligible seniors vouchers to use at approved farmers markets, including the Carter County Farmer’s Market. The program provides fifty dollars to help cover the cost of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and even locally produced honey.
To qualify, individuals must be 60 years of age or older and meet income guidelines set at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. The program is limited to Carter County residents.
Sign-ups will begin on Tuesday, May 20th, and will be handled by appointment only through the Carter County Extension Office. To schedule a time, residents can call 606-474-6686 or 606-713-1840 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Applicants will need to provide basic information including their name, address, phone number, date of birth, and income details. A valid government-issued ID or other proof of identification will also be required at the appointment.
Officials emphasize that walk-ins will not be accepted, so scheduling ahead is required.
