It may seem a bit too early for Memory Days for many throughout our communities, but not for your friends from the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce. Although the big celebration won’t head our way until the summer, they are already hard at work preparing to make the 2025 event bigger and better than ever. Recently officials from the Chamber released a call for submissions to be entered into the Memory Days Veterans Highlight Reel which will be a part of this summer’s salute.
Anyone who has a veteran loved one that they would like to honor in the highlight reel is being asked to please submit the applications through an online Google Docs form which can be accessed by scanning a QR code found on the official Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. However, if you can’t access the form they are also accepting submission via email at mcclain.dyer@gmail.com. When emailing please be sure to add a title to the subject line reading VETERANS HIGHLIGHT REEL in all capital letters. Also included should be the name, date of birth, branch of service, and a photo of the veteran you wish to honor.
The submission deadline is set to remain open until the date of Saturday, May 10th.

Carter County’s Relay for Life is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, and organizers are inviting you to join them in saying “Happy birthday!” The very special event will be held in the Ralph’s Foodfair Parking lot on Saturday, April 26th from 11am until 2pm.
Throughout the afternoon hot dogs, refreshments, prizes, and even free cupcakes will all be handed out to those who choose to come out and enjoy the event.
Once again that’s the 40th birthday celebration for Carter County’s Relay for Life.

The Carter County Poetry Society has partnered up with Holler Down The Holler to host a poetry slam as part of the 2025 Memory Days festivities that will take place right here in Grayson. The slam will be held inside the Grayson Gallery and Art Center located at 301 East Third Street on Thursday, May 22nd kicking off at 6pm. The entire event is free to both participate and attend, and the Poetry Society is hoping for a good turnout for this year’s slam.
If you’re wanting to get involved then be prepared to bring your best voice and best poetry, because cash prizes will be awarded throughout the evening to the top three poets. All winners will be chosen and judged based on the public attending the event. Everyone is invited to mark their calendars and prepare for the 2025 Memory Days Poetry Slam brought to you by the Carter County Poetry Society and Holler Down The Holler.

UK King’s Daughters has officially released their schedule of free sports physicals for local high school students for 2025. The free sports physicals will be made available for student athletes that are ages 13 through 19. Parents or guardians do not need to be present, but must complete and submit the required forms in ink with a signature. Further, no appointment is necessary for these events and all physicals will be performed by athletic trainers and the KDMC orthopedic staff.
Dates for the high schools that are within our service area are as follows: West Carter High School Friday, April 25th from 9 to 11am, Ashland Paul Blazer High School also on April 25th from 12:30 to 2:30pm, Boyd County’s high school will see physicals conducted on May 1st from 8:30 to 11:30am, and finally East Carter’s turn heads our way on Friday, May 2nd from 1 to 2:30pm.
Finally, an open date for all Kentucky high school athletes ages 13 to 19 will be held on Friday, July 11th from 9 to 12 noon at the UK King’s Daughters Medical Pavilion at 2000 Ashland Drive in Russell. All required sports physical forms can be found by scanning a QR code on the event’s official flyer.
