A free educational opportunity is coming up for expectant mothers and new moms across our region.
KY-Moms M.A.T.R. and Pathways will host a free two-hour virtual workshop called “My Journey, My Health: A Prevention and Risk Reduction Educational Workshop.”
The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8th, beginning at 11:00 in the morning, and is designed for pregnant women and new mothers who have infants under one year old.
Women from Carter and surrounding counties are invited to participate, including those from Bath, Boyd, Elliott, Greenup, Lawrence, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan and Rowan Counties.
The workshop will focus on health education, prevention and ways participants can reduce potential health risks as they navigate pregnancy and early motherhood.
And there’s an added incentive for those who take part. Participants will receive a 25-dollar Walmart gift card for attending the workshop.

Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, if you’re looking for one place to keep track of Kentucky’s upcoming hunting and trapping seasons, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has released its 2026-2027 season guide.
And there’s a season opening this Saturday, August 15th.
That’s when Kentucky’s fall squirrel season gets underway, giving hunters their first opportunity of the new season to get back into the woods. The squirrel season runs through November 13th, then picks back up November 16th and continues through February 28th.
But squirrels are just the beginning. The official guide includes season dates and regulations for deer, turkey, elk, bear, waterfowl, small game, furbearers and a variety of migratory birds, along with trapping seasons.
For deer hunters, the calendar includes archery, crossbow, youth-only opportunities, muzzleloader, modern firearm and free youth weekend seasons. There are also specific dates listed for quota elk, fall turkey, waterfowl and other popular game.
The department reminds hunters that regulations and season dates can be subject to change, and some wildlife management areas may have different regulations. Because of that, hunters are encouraged to check the online hunting guide for the most current information before heading into the field.

Farmers, families and anyone interested in agriculture and the future of farming are invited to take part in this year’s Farm and Family Field Day, coming up next month at R&J Farms in Garrison.
The event will be held Thursday, September 10th, at R&J Farms, located at 693 Cattle Run in Garrison, with registration beginning at 5 PM.
The evening will get underway with registration, a food line and a dessert contest, with entries for the contest accepted until 5:30. The program officially begins at 6 PM with a welcome, followed at 6:15 by a question-and-answer session featuring farm owner Robert Jones, along with representatives from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Division of Forestry.
The discussion will focus on diversified farming operations, including topics such as bees, freezer beef, timber and other opportunities available to local producers.
The evening will also include highlights from local businesses and agricultural organizations, along with door prizes. Attendees will hear from Dr. Steve Higgins of UK Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering about farm efficiency and innovations, and there will also be an opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the farm.
Organizers say this is a chance to learn more about agriculture right here in our region, meet others involved in farming and see some of the ways local producers are adapting and finding new opportunities.
The 2026 Farm and Family Field Day is set for Thursday, September 10th, with registration beginning at 5 PM at R&J Farms in Garrison.
One important note for anyone planning to attend: parking at the farm is limited, so organizers strongly recommend carpooling. And don’t forget to bring a lawn chair.
The event is being presented through the Carter and Greenup County Cooperative Extension Service and the Carter County Soil Conservation District, with support from local agricultural organizations and the East and West Carter FFA chapters.
