After a long and difficult stretch of winter weather, many parts of Carter County are beginning to find their footing again.
Snow and ice shut down businesses, offices, and government services across our listening area over the weekend, but thanks to the tireless work of road crews, emergency management, and first responders, conditions have steadily improved. Major roadways are in much better shape, and many Carter Countians are slowly easing back into their normal day-to-day routines.
That said, travel is still not without challenges. Back roads, hills, and side lanes across the county remain rough in spots, and drivers are urged to continue using caution—especially during the early morning and evening hours when refreezing can occur.
Adding to the challenge, much colder than normal temperatures will linger. Highs are expected to stay at or below the freezing mark through Monday, with another surge of bitter cold arriving this weekend. Saturday’s highs are forecast to stay in the teens, and overnight lows near zero are possible. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, bring pets indoors, and take extra care with heating sources.

Due to ongoing concerns with road conditions, the Carter County School System has canceled classes for the remainder of the week, meaning schools will not be in session today or Friday.

Students at East Carter High School are working on something special that will leave a lasting mark on their campus — and they’re inviting the entire community to be part of it. The East Carter High School Class of 2026 has launched a new fundraiser to create what’s being called the Raider Legacy Garden. The garden will be built on the East Carter High School campus and is designed to honor the people and stories that have shaped the school since it first opened its doors back in 1971.
Organizers say the garden will serve as a place of reflection, remembrance, and pride — recognizing alumni, former and current teachers and staff, students, families, and supporters who have all played a role in the East Carter story over the years.
As part of the project, community members can purchase engraved bricks that will become a permanent part of the garden. These bricks can be personalized to honor a loved one, celebrate your own time at East Carter, recognize a favorite teacher or coach, or simply show your Raider pride. Each engraved brick will help tell the story of East Carter High School — one name, one memory, one generation at a time — creating a space that students and visitors will be able to enjoy for years to come.
The deadline to purchase a brick is April 1st, 2026, and all proceeds will go toward making the Raider Legacy Garden a reality. Those interested in participating can find ordering information online through East Carter High School’s fundraiser page, or by checking with the school for details.

The Carter County Clean-Up Campaign has been canceled for this week due to the recent winter weather and ongoing road conditions across the county.
Officials who oversee the Clean-Up say the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, with safety for both residents and clean-up crews remaining the top priority.
The good news is the clean-up will return to the East End of Carter County beginning Tuesday, February 4th through Thursday, February 6th. Dumpsters will once again be available at the county maintenance garage in Grayson, with personnel on site to assist with unloading each day from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM.
The Carter County Clean-Up operates on a rotating schedule between the East and West ends of the county and is made possible through the continued efforts of the Carter County Solid Waste Department, helping keep local communities clean, safe, and looking their best.
Again, this week’s County Clean-Up has been canceled due to weather, with dumpsters returning to the East End in Grayson February 4th through the 6th, from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM each day.
