Attention parents and guardians of incoming 6th graders or new students at East Carter Middle—today is the day that ECMS is hosting a special Jumpstart Day to help students ease into their new school environment before classes begin.
Students will be split into two groups by last name: A through M will attend from 9 to 11 AM, and N through Z will attend from 1 to 3 PM
During their session, students will take part in fun icebreakers, get-to-know-you activities, practice opening lockers, tour the building, and go over school rules and expectations. It’s a hands-on way to help them feel confident and ready for that first day back.
Parents are welcome to drop off and pick up their student—but take note, class schedules will not be available that day. Those are expected to come out sometime in August.
To help the school plan for the event, families are asked to fill out a short Google form, which is linked on the East Carter Middle School Facebook page.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet wants to give a heads up for drivers traveling between Carter and Lawrence Counties as a major bridge replacement project has now been launched on KY 1 near Willard, just over Dry Fork at milepoints 14.126–14.140.
The existing bridge, which has been flagged for poor structural condition, will see a full overhaul — including new beams, a deck, and barrier walls — all designed to improve safety and extend the lifespan of this critical connector.
Here’s what you need to know about traffic impacts: one-lane traffic will be maintained throughout the project using temporary traffic signals. Traffic will shift between lanes as crews make progress. The bridge lane will be narrowed to 10 feet, 6 inches, meaning a 10-foot width restriction will be in place.
Wide loads will need to find alternate routes, so plan ahead if you’re hauling heavy. The project is being handled by Walker Construction under District 12, with an expected completion window in mid-November 2025.
Road work schedules may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
