Goats, sheep, and other small livestock play a big role on many of our local farms — and there’s a chance coming up to learn more about how to raise them successfully.
The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service will be hosting a Small Ruminant Workshop on Thursday, October 9th, at 5:00 p.m. The event will take place at 249 Industrial Park Road in Louisa. This workshop is especially designed for farmers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in learning more about the care, management, and benefits of small ruminants.
The evening will feature guest speaker Dr. Jessie Lay from the University of Kentucky, who will be sharing her expertise and answering questions about herd health, nutrition, breeding, and the economic opportunities that goats and sheep can bring to your farm.
Participation is CAIP eligible and spots are limited, so early registration is encouraged. To sign up, contact your local county Extension office — Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, or Lawrence County — and they’ll be glad to help get you registered.

Attention Carter County farmers — applications are about to open for the County Agricultural Incentives Program, better known as CAIP. This program helps farmers make important improvements on their farms with support from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.
Eligible areas include farm diversification, fencing and water improvements, large and small animal projects, grain and forage improvements, poultry, on-farm energy, and much more.
The application window runs from Monday, October 6th through Friday, October 24th, and no applications will be accepted before or after those dates.
Applications will be available at the Carter County Conservation District Office in Grayson, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
