District Nine of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will continue working on a paving project this week on KY 1 in Greenup County. The paving will take place throughout the week along 7 miles of KY 1. Set to continue throughout the week, motorists should expect one-lane flagged traffic on KY 1 between the Greenup/Carter County line (mile point 0) and Addie Road (mile point 5.34).
Road work schedules may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling
The work is being done by Mountain Enterprises, Inc., under a $837 thousand Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract.

After the recent string of inclement weather that has swept through the Commonwealth, FEMA has posted a public notice online announcing its intent to provide financial assistance throughout the state. This assistance is aiming to support Kentucky survivors who experienced loss as the result of Feb. 14 – March 7 severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides and mudslides.
This notice applies to the Individual Assistance, Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation grants programs implemented under the authority of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. This public notice concerns activities that may affect historic properties, activities that are located in or affect wetland areas and the 100-year floodplain, and activities that may involve critical actions within the 500-year floodplain.
This newly posted notice follows Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear issuing his own comments in an update following severe storms that brought flooding damage across the Bluegrass State. In those comments Governor Beshear said “Four days of severe storms have brought devastation to communities across the commonwealth.” Before continuing to say “While the threat of severe storms has ended, several rivers and creeks remain at or above flood stage and roadways remain under water in several areas. So we need folks to remain cautious.”

It’s that time of year when the Carter County Soil and Conservation District conduct their annual tree giveaway for 2025. This year’s event has been scheduled for Friday, April 25th and will take place at the Carter County Farmers Market Shed. Trees will be given out on a first come first served basis and all individuals that come out to participate in the event will be given 10 seedlings of their choosing.
Seedlings available for the 2025 event include: flowering dogwood, paw paw, persimmon, Kentucky coffeetree, chestnut oak, wild plum, white oak, and red Shumard oak. Please note that this event is open for Carter County citizens only.

Here’s a reminder about the working calendar that the Carter County School System is observing for the remainder of the 2025 school year. The final day of classroom activities for students has been set as Friday, May 30th. Official graduation dates for East and West Carter have been set for the school year as well. Those festivities have been set for the following dates: West Carter High School will celebrate graduation on Friday, May 30th beginning at 7pm and East Carter High School will follow the next day on Saturday, May 31st at 10am.

Celebrate Recovery, a weekly meeting series held at the First Church of Christ in Grayson on Pomeroy Street, will begin tonight’s meeting at 6:30pm. At the meetings those in attendance will learn the secrets of victorious living over issues such as: addictions, anger, depression, mental stresses, and much more. Large and small group meetings will be held each week. All are welcome to attend, and free food will be offered to all who are in attendance.
