Carter County Schools is inviting the community to be part of an important conversation about preparing local students for much more than just the next test or the next grade level.
The school system is hosting “Growing More Than Graduates,” a Durable Skills Community Event designed to bring schools, families, businesses and community members together to talk about the skills students need to succeed both in school and throughout their lives.
Those skills go beyond academics. They include communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, leadership, character, perseverance, a growth mindset and the ability to adapt and keep learning.
And Carter County Schools says developing those skills isn’t something that happens only inside a classroom. Students learn through athletics, churches, community organizations, local businesses, healthcare providers, their families and, perhaps most importantly, through the relationships they build with adults who coach them, mentor them, employ them, teach them and encourage them.
That’s why everyone in the community is invited to take part.
There will be two opportunities to attend the event. The first is Tuesday, August 25th at 6:00 PM at First Church of Christ in Grayson. The meeting will be held downstairs in the main church, with attendees asked to use the carport entrance.
A second event will be held Thursday, August 27th at 6:00 PM at First Christian Church in Olive Hill.
You can attend whichever location is most convenient.
Carter County Schools is especially encouraging families, coaches, business owners, healthcare professionals, church and community leaders, local government officials, youth mentors and anyone who regularly interacts with local students to attend.
Refreshments will be served.
The message behind the event is simple: our schools are only one stop on a student’s journey. When the entire community works together to help young people develop the skills, character and confidence they need, those lessons can follow them long after graduation.
Again, “Growing More Than Graduates” takes place Tuesday, August 25th in Grayson and Thursday, August 27th in Olive Hill, with both events beginning at 6:00 PM.

Kentucky families who need a little extra help keeping up with summer electric bills will soon have an opportunity to apply for assistance through the LIHEAP Summer Subsidy Program.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, September 11th, or until available funding has been exhausted. The program is designed to help eligible households with the cost of home electricity by making payments directly to participating energy providers.
To qualify, households must have an income at or below 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Assistance is available in every Kentucky county and applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Locally, residents in Carter County can apply through the Northeast Kentucky Community Action office located at 539 Hitchins Avenue in Olive Hill. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Those with questions can call 606-286-5344 for more information.
If you think you may qualify, officials encourage you not to wait. Applying early can help ensure assistance is available before program funds are depleted.

Celebrate Recovery is designed to help those facing addiction, anger, depression, emotional stress, and a wide range of life struggles. Each week includes both large group teachings and small group discussions, giving attendees a chance to connect and grow in a safe, structured space.
No matter where you are in your journey, all are welcome, and a free meal is offered to everyone who attends.
