Today marks the original back-to-school date for the Carter County School District, and although officials had planned for faculty, staff, and students to fill classrooms today – the weather had a different plan entirely. Although the winter storm system didn’t quite hit the peaks of what some projections were predicting it still brought many activities to a screeching halt for the start of this week. At midday on Monday, Superintendent Dr. Paul Green and other officials from our school system made the call to postpone back-to-school activities in favor of the safety for all of our school aged children and the hard working staff of our schools.
This means that today, as well as tomorrow Wednesday, January 8th, will be utilizing NTI learning for all students. As of now there has been no released information about the District’s intentions for the rest of the week – but rest assured that Go Radio will attempt to keep you up to date with their plans, and if school is cancelled for any additional days we will announce them during our daily newscasts.
Classroom activities aren’t the only casualty of the winter weather, though. The East Carter Raiders and Lady Raiders were set to take on Russell tonight in a double header game. Now both of those games have been cancelled due to the weather. Currently no information has been released to us on if the games will be rescheduled or when.
Several other area school systems have also announced their own closures with Elliot, Greenup, and Lewis Counties all choosing to utilize an NTI learning day while Russell Independent Schools are observing a traditional snow day. Finally, for the college side of things all Maysville Community and Technical College locations will be operating with limited remote services.

Elsewhere throughout our community for this Tuesday there have been various other closings announced. These include: the Carter County Courthouse, both the Olive Hill and Grayson branches of the Carter County Public Library as it follows the school system in closings, the Little Sandy Beekeepers have cancelled their meeting for today, all Fresh Start Clinics and the Grayson PrimayPlus offices & pharmacy, Pathways Outpatient & administrative offices, and for the Justice Center all Family Court proceedings have been postponed. Onto businesses that are changing their operations for the day: Walking on Sunshine Wellness Spa and Shoppe, Little Dippers is closing all of its locations, The Willis Law Office.

No one quite knew exactly what to expect when Winter Storm Blair hit, but that did not stop those within leadership positions pitching in to give their all to best prepare and serve their communities. Especially on the local level our officials were out in force with a very active presence working hard to connect those in need throughout the area to the proper channels that could provide that very help. Whether it was snowed in neighbors needing help cleaning off their property, or helping those whose heaters which broke down in a very inopportune moment get in touch with someone who could fix it for them – it was heartwarming and inspiring to see just how hard everyone in our communities were coming together to get through Blair together.
With that said, it currently appears that a State of Emergency remains in effect on both the statewide level as well as throughout the City of Grayson. Although it seems like the worst is behind us for the moment please remember that the cold weather is expected to stick around for at least the remainder of this week. Some maps and projections are now warning residents of the Bluegrass state that another round of snow could make its way to us by this weekend – so continue to be diligent and prepared for anything that the winter system brings our way.
