A celebration of Appalachian traditions, craftsmanship and community is returning to Grayson this month, as the Appalachia KY Herb and Handcraft Heritage Festival comes back to the City Park Block.
The free, family-friendly festival is set for Saturday, September 26th, from 9 AM until 4 PM in downtown Grayson.
Organizers say the festival is all about celebrating and preserving the traditions, skills and creative spirit that make Appalachia unique. Throughout the day, visitors can explore artisan vendors, learn about herbs and plants, watch traditional handcraft demonstrations and discover homesteading skills and other pieces of Appalachian heritage.
There will also be historical presentations, local food and activities for people of all ages.
The festival gives local makers, growers, artists, herbalists, historians, musicians and community organizations an opportunity to share their knowledge and talents with the community. Organizers say it’s also an important opportunity to pass those traditions and skills along to future generations.
And the celebration doesn’t end when the festival wraps up.
That evening, a Dinner Variety Show will be held from 6 until 8 PM at the historic Grahn School Community Center. The evening will feature local talent celebrating Appalachian heritage, along with a home-cooked country meal and plenty of music, storytelling, laughter and fellowship.
Tickets for the Dinner Variety Show are $25 per person.
Organizers are also looking for local artists, musicians, herbalists, homesteaders, demonstrators, vendors and community organizations interested in participating. Businesses and civic groups can also get involved through sponsorships, donations or volunteer opportunities.
For more information about participating, volunteering or supporting the festival, contact Pamela Howard at 606-465-5831, or email pamelahowardbiz@gmail.com.

If you’re looking for a reason to get out on the golf course this fall, the Kentucky State Police are inviting you to tee it up for a very special cause.
The Kentucky State Police will host a Trooper Island Golf Scramble on Friday, September 18th, at Hidden Cove, and teams are now being encouraged to get registered. Registration will begin at 8 o’clock that morning, with the first teams teeing off at 9 o’clock.
The cost is $300 per team, and there is a limit of just 24 teams, so if you’re interested, you’ll want to get your team together and make plans to participate.
And while this is certainly an opportunity to spend a day on the golf course with friends, coworkers, or fellow members of the community, the reason behind the event is what really makes it special. The proceeds support Kentucky State Police Trooper Island, a program that has been helping Kentucky children for decades.
Trooper Island was established by the Kentucky State Police in 1965 and provides a free summer camp experience for children, giving them the opportunity to spend a week enjoying outdoor activities, building confidence, learning about teamwork and leadership, and developing positive relationships with Kentucky State Police troopers.
For the children who get to experience Trooper Island, it’s about much more than a week away from home. It’s an opportunity to make memories, learn new skills, and build relationships with troopers and other kids from across the Commonwealth. And that’s where this golf scramble comes in.
So, if you enjoy golf and would like to support a program that gives Kentucky kids an opportunity to experience something they may not otherwise have, grab three of your friends and put together a team.
Again, the Kentucky State Police Trooper Island Golf Scramble is Friday, September 18th, at Hidden Cove. Registration begins at 8 o’clock that morning, with tee-off at 9. The cost is $300 per team, and only 24 teams will be accepted.
Get your team together, enjoy a day on the course, and help support the Kentucky State Police Trooper Island program and the young people it serves.
