The wait is finally over as today marks the official opening of the carnival rides at the Carter County Fair, giving fairgoers their first chance this week to climb aboard their favorite rides, enjoy the midway and take in all the excitement that comes with fair week.
Wednesday is Papa John’s Night at the Fair, and there is plenty happening throughout the evening for the whole family.
Admission is 15 dollars, and that includes carnival rides. The Great American Carnival opens at 6 p.m., so get ready for an evening of rides, lights and plenty of fairground fun.
The Petting Zoo will be open from 5:30 until 9 p.m., while the Exhibit Hall will be open for viewing from 6 until 8 p.m. And don’t forget about Chase’s Racing Pigs, with three shows scheduled throughout the evening.
If you’ve got a talent you’d like to show off, Talent Show sign-ups begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Midway Stage, with the Talent Show getting underway at 7 p.m.
At 7:30, it’s time to see who has the appetite to take home the title in the Papa John’s Pizza Eating Contest. Sign-ups will take place at the fairgrounds, but participation is limited, so you’ll want to get registered early.
And for those looking for some high-octane excitement, the Tri-State MX Motocross will take over the Motor Arena tonight. Riders can sign up at the fairgrounds, with practice beginning at 6 p.m. and the event getting underway at 7 p.m.
So grab the family, bring your appetite, and get ready for the rides because the carnival is officially open today at the Carter County Fair! Gates open for the carnival at 6 p.m., with a full evening of entertainment, competition and family fun waiting at the fairgrounds.

As the first day of school draws closer, another Carter County school is getting ready to welcome students and families back through its doors.
Prichard Elementary School has announced its annual Open House will take place on Thursday, August 13th, from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m., giving students and parents an opportunity to meet teachers, explore classrooms, and get familiar with the school before the new year officially begins.
School officials say Open House is designed to help families start the year with confidence. Students can see where they’ll be spending their days, parents can learn about classroom expectations and routines, and everyone has a chance to ask questions before the busy first week of school begins.
The event is open to Prichard Elementary families and serves as a chance to reconnect with friends, meet new classmates, and get excited about another year of learning. Staff members say they’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back and helping students get off to a successful start.
Again, Prichard Elementary School’s Open House will be held Thursday, August 13th, from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. Families are encouraged to stop by, meet the staff, and kick off the new school year with Hornet pride.

The Carter County Clean-Up campaign continues this week, with crews operating on the West end of the county. Dumpsters will be available for public use at the county maintenance garage located along US 60, and clean-up personnel will be on hand to help unload items each day from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, today through Friday.
As a reminder, the list of items not accepted has been updated. Crews will not collect refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, or batteries. And all materials brought to the site must be bagged or boxed — no loose items will be accepted. The County Clean-Up runs on a rotating schedule, alternating between the East and West ends of Carter County every two weeks. After this week’s collection, dumpsters are scheduled to return to the Grayson maintenance garage from August 19th through the 21st.
