The countdown to the first day of school is on, and several Carter County schools are rolling out the welcome mat with open houses and special events to help students and families get a head start on the year.
We begin in the west end with West Carter High School, which will hold its back-to-school open house this Thursday, August 14th. Incoming freshmen will get the first look at 5:30 p.m., followed by all other students at 6:30. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend, with everyone entering through the gym lobby. The evening wraps up at 7:30, giving students a chance to get familiar with their classrooms and teachers before the school year officially begins.
Moving over to East Carter Middle School, their open house is set for Monday, August 18th from 4 to 7 p.m. Families will be able to tour the school, meet the teaching staff, pick up class schedules, and complete online registration. School officials say it’s a great way to take care of multiple back-to-school tasks in one visit. More information can be found on the ECMiddleRaiders Facebook page.
Heritage Elementary School will open its doors on Tuesday, August 19th, welcoming students and families from 4:30 to 6 p.m. It’s a chance for younger learners to ease first-day jitters, explore their classrooms, and say hello to their teachers.
Also on Tuesday, August 19th, East Carter High School will hold its open house. Freshmen will have the spotlight from 5 to 5:30 p.m., then students in grades 10 through 12 will join in from 5:30 to 7. In addition to meeting teachers and finding classrooms, families will receive important Title I information for the upcoming school year.
Over on the west end once again, Olive Hill Elementary School is adding a little extra excitement to its welcome-back tradition with a school-wide open house pep rally on Thursday, August 21st. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., and the pep rally kicks off at 5:30, setting the tone for a spirited start to the year.
And finally, Tygart Creek Elementary School will host its open house on Wednesday, August 20th from 5 to 6:30 p.m., inviting families to tour the building, meet staff, and get ready for another year of learning.

The City of Grayson Street Department is looking to add a new member to their team, with an opening for a part-time maintenance worker.
The position includes responsibilities like lawn care, assisting with road repairs, and a variety of other duties as needed. City officials say the job is a good fit for someone who enjoys working outdoors and contributing to the upkeep of the community.
Pay will be based on experience, and applications can be picked up at the City Building at 302 East Main Street in Grayson.

The Carter County Clean-Up campaign continues this week, with crews operating on the West end of the county. Dumpsters will be available for public use at the county maintenance garage along US 60, and clean-up personnel will be on hand to help unload items each day from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, today through Friday.
As a reminder, the list of items not accepted has been updated. Crews will not collect refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, or batteries. And all materials brought to the site must be bagged or boxed — no loose items will be accepted. The County Clean-Up runs on a rotating schedule, alternating between the East and West ends of Carter County every two weeks. After this week’s collection, dumpsters are scheduled to return to the Grayson maintenance garage along US 60 from August 20th through the 22nd.
