If you’re a nurse aide looking to take the next step in your healthcare career, a new training opportunity is getting underway this week.
The 2026 fall Kentucky Medication Aide, or KMA, program begins Thursday, August 20th, through Ashland Community and Technical College’s Workforce Solutions program.
The course is designed to prepare eligible nurse aides to safely administer medications in long-term care settings, providing additional skills that can open the door to expanded responsibilities and new opportunities in the healthcare field.
Classes will meet on Thursdays from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM and will be offered in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online instruction. Classes will be held through the Technology Drive campus.
The instructor for the course is Rachael Potter. Tuition is $1,300, plus the cost of the required book, and the program is currently accepting students, with limited seats available.

Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, if you’re looking for one place to keep track of Kentucky’s upcoming hunting and trapping seasons, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has released its 2026-2027 season guide.
And there’s a season opening this Saturday, August 15th.
That’s when Kentucky’s fall squirrel season gets underway, giving hunters their first opportunity of the new season to get back into the woods. The squirrel season runs through November 13th, then picks back up November 16th and continues through February 28th.
But squirrels are just the beginning. The official guide includes season dates and regulations for deer, turkey, elk, bear, waterfowl, small game, furbearers and a variety of migratory birds, along with trapping seasons.
For deer hunters, the calendar includes archery, crossbow, youth-only opportunities, muzzleloader, modern firearm and free youth weekend seasons. There are also specific dates listed for quota elk, fall turkey, waterfowl and other popular game.
The department reminds hunters that regulations and season dates can be subject to change, and some wildlife management areas may have different regulations. Because of that, hunters are encouraged to check the online hunting guide for the most current information before heading into the field.

The Carter County Clean-Up campaign continues this week, with crews operating on the East end of the county. Dumpsters will be available for public use at the county maintenance garage located in Grayson, and clean-up personnel will be on hand to help unload items each day from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, today through Friday.
As a reminder, the list of items not accepted has been updated. Crews will not collect refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, or batteries. And all materials brought to the site must be bagged or boxed — no loose items will be accepted. The County Clean-Up runs on a rotating schedule, alternating between the East and West ends of Carter County every two weeks. After this week’s collection, dumpsters are scheduled to return to the maintenance garage located along US 60 from August 26th through the 28th.
This valuable community service is made possible by the Carter County Solid Waste Department, who continue to support these efforts to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and beautiful. Again, dumpsters are open today through Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, at the West end site in Olive Hill.
