Get ready, car lovers—due to this past weekend’s unpredictable weather, the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department’s Fire & Smoke Car Show originally set for Flag Day has been postponed. That’s right—it’s now scheduled for Saturday, September 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hosted by The Hog’s Trough, the event is open to all vehicles, with a $10 registration fee and a face-painting fundraising booth accepting donations. Trophies await winners in categories like Best in Show, Rat Rod, Long-Haul Legend, Veteran-Owned, Hot Rod, and more. There’s something for every auto enthusiast!
What’s more, proceeds from the day will help support the 2026 Kentucky Firefighters Association (EKFA) conference, proudly hosted by the Grayson Fire Department.

We want to remind all of Carter County’s student athletes along with their parent or guardian that an open date is headed our way for free sports physicals from the professionals at UK King’s Daughters. The program is open to Kentucky students ages 13 to 19 and is designed to ensure young athletes are cleared and ready for participation in school sports. No appointment is required, and parents or guardians are not required to be present. However, they must complete and sign all required physical forms in ink prior to the event. Physicals will be conducted by licensed athletic trainers and orthopedic staff from KDMC.
The open date for all Kentucky high school athletes ages 13 to 19 will be held on Friday, July 11th from 9 to 12 noon at the UK King’s Daughters Medical Pavilion at 2000 Ashland Drive in Russell. All required sports physical forms can be found by scanning a QR code on the event’s official flyer.

Get ready to make a splash in one of the most unique summer events around! Carter Caves State Resort Park is opening up Cave Branch Cave for an unforgettable Underground Pool Party on June 25th, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Bring your favorite floatie, slip into a provided lifejacket, and get set to drift through the cool, dark waters of the cave. This special one-day event offers up to 45 minutes of floating time in the cave, where water levels can reach up to 8 feet deep.
Closed-toe shoes are a must, and all participants must check in at the Welcome Center before the adventure begins. This event is weather-dependent, so keep an eye out for updates.
Tickets are just $10 per person, and participants must be 8 years or older. Guests under 18 must have a guardian present, and all attendees must sign a waiver before entering.

The Carter County Clean-Up campaign continues this week, with crews operating on the West end of the county. Dumpsters will be available for public use at the county maintenance garage along US 60, and clean-up personnel will be on hand to help unload items each day from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, today and Friday – however dumpsters will not be made available on Thursday of this week.
As a reminder, the list of items not accepted has been updated. Crews will not collect refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, or batteries. And all materials brought to the site must be bagged or boxed — no loose items will be accepted. The County Clean-Up runs on a rotating schedule, alternating between the East and West ends of Carter County every two weeks. After this week’s collection, dumpsters are scheduled to return to the Grayson maintenance garage from June 25th through the 27th.
This valuable community service is made possible by the Carter County Solid Waste Department, who continue to support these efforts to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and beautiful.
Again, dumpsters are open today and Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, at the West end site in Olive Hill.
