Carter County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program Kicks Off This Week as the Carter County Public Library is ready to turn up the color this summer with its annual Summer Reading Program returning for 2025.
Running from June 4 through August 1, this year’s theme is “Color Our World,” with each week focused on exploring the arts—from painting and photography to music, dance, and creative storytelling.
The program offers more than just a love of books. It’s designed to encourage educational exploration, socialization, and creative expression—all in a fun, welcoming environment. Kids can expect hands-on activities, themed lessons, and a new adventure each week.
Programs are offered in two locations: Olive Hill with Group #1 meeting Wednesdays, and Group #2 on Fridays, and in Grayson which will hold meetings every Thursdays. All sessions begin at 12:00 noon, and free school lunches will be provided.
Library staff say they’re thrilled to welcome young readers back for another season of fun, learning, and imagination—and they can’t wait to see what the kids create.

Carter County Schools is once again stepping up to make sure no child goes hungry this summer. The district’s Summer Meals Program will run from June 9 through August 1, providing free meals to students across the county—even while school is out.
Open to all children, the program offers both dine-in and drive-thru options to make access as easy as possible for busy families. Meals will be served Monday through Friday, with the exception of July 4 and July 29, when service will pause in observance of the holiday and to give hard-working staff and volunteers a well-earned break.
Dine-in locations include: East Carter Middle School and West Carter High School, with drive-thru options available at Olive Hill Elementary School and Prichard Elementary School however please note that all drive-thru participants must be in line by 1:00 P.M.
This program reflects the very best of Carter County—neighbors helping neighbors, and volunteers working behind the scenes to ensure our children stay healthy, fed, and cared for during the summer months.
From kitchen staff and delivery drivers to the smiling faces handing out meals in the sun, it takes a team of dedicated people to make this happen. And for the families who rely on it, the impact is real and lasting.

The Carter County Clean-Up campaign continues this week, with crews operating on the West end of the county. Dumpsters will be available for public use at the county maintenance garage along US 60, and clean-up personnel will be on hand to help unload items each day from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Wednesday through Friday.
As a reminder, the list of items not accepted has been updated. Crews will not collect refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, household garbage, paint, tires, or batteries. And all materials brought to the site must be bagged or boxed — no loose items will be accepted. The County Clean-Up runs on a rotating schedule, alternating between the East and West ends of Carter County every two weeks. After this week’s collection, dumpsters are scheduled to return to the Grayson maintenance garage along US 60 from June 4th through the 7th.
This valuable community service is made possible by the Carter County Solid Waste Department, who continue to support these efforts to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and beautiful.
Again, dumpsters are open this Wednesday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, at the West end site in Olive Hill.
