The Carter County Board of Education held a special meeting session on Monday of this week. There may have only been a single topic on their agenda but it was a very important one – as they discussed amending the current 2024-25 school year calendar. After a discussion was held during the special session it was determined that the following changes have been made to the originally published schedule: this year’s Spring Break for students, faculty, and staff will be the dates of Thursday, April 3rd and Friday, April 4th. This means that school will be in session for the first three days of that week March 31st through April 2nd. The final day of classroom activities was also set as June 4th.
Finally, it was determined that the Board of Education will be re-evaluating the calendar pending potential legislation, and if any further changes are made they will update the district.

Grayson’s Freewill Baptist Church is all set to hold a special Women’s Day Giveaway that is headed your way this weekend on Saturday, March 15th. The giveaway event will be held from 10am until 12 noon at the church location which is 1778 East US Highway 60. Items including make-up, hair products, jewelry, and more will be given away.

UK King’s Daughters has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky once again for the year of 2025. This marks the second year in a row that the organization has earned the award be being named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management and ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company. Only 100 companies throughout the Commonwealth earned the Best Places to Work distinction in 2025. Companies are selected for the honor based on an assessment of the company’s employee policies and procedures and the results of an internal employee survey.

Your friends from the Elliott County Extension Office released some information recently about two upcoming events. The first reminds area farmers that it’s about that time of year that the Elliott County Farmer’s Market prepares to take applications for farmers that want to sign up and sell their produce this season. A sign up meeting and training date has been set for two separate occasions: one on Tuesday, March 25th at 5pm and another the following day Wednesday, March 26th beginning at 10am. The meetings will be held at 2944 South KY-7 in Sandy Hook at the Elliott County Extension Office.
Next up sign ups for 4-H Shooting Sports will be held later this month, also at the Extension Office location, and will take place on Monday, March 24th beginning at 5pm. These signups will be for children ages 9 through 18 and include 22 rifle, archery, trap, and air rifle.

If you’ve ever wanted to work in the beauty of one of our best state parks, then now may be your time. As Carter Caves State Resort Park will soon be hosting open interviews for the position of a seasonal interpretive guide this Friday on March 14th from 3 until 5pm. According to an official release from Carter Caves the job description reads “seeking an enthusiastic interpretive guide to lead cave tours, deliver engaging interpretive programs, and conduct trail maintenance. This role involves educating visitors, speaking to large groups, and enhancing their understanding of the natural and cultural significance of the site. Ideal candidates have strong public speaking skills, a passion for outdoor education, and the ability to work in various environmental conditions.”
If you would like to participate in the open interviews they you’re being encouraged to bring your passion for nature and public speaking, and meet at the Welcome Center at approximately 3pm this Friday, March 14th.
