John Everett Sexton, age 87, of Grayson, Kentucky, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 7, 1937, he was the cherished son of the late Homer and Hazel McDavid Sexton.
John was a devoted husband to his late wife, Lucy F. Grizzell Sexton, who preceded him in death, along with his beloved siblings: Mabel Webb, Nadine Rose, and Alvin “Boots” Sexton. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and strength.
A proud veteran, John served honorably in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. After his military service, he dedicated 35 years to AK Steel, where he was known for his hard work and commitment. His contributions to his community extended beyond his profession; he was an active member of the Hitchins Free Will Baptist Church, where he found joy and fellowship.
John was a Kentucky Colonel, a title that reflects his character and the respect he garnered throughout his life. He had a deep passion for rabbit hunting, a pursuit that brought him joy and camaraderie with friends and family.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Rhonda Sue Griffith of Grayson; two granddaughters, Kisha (Josh) Bush of Grayson and Christie (Sebastian) Joy of Ashland; and four great-grandchildren, Halle Bush, Layla Bush, Keaton Joy, and Kobe Joy. He is also survived by his sister, Lavon Nuckols of Virginia; Rhonda’s mother, Kay Ratcliff Perry of Grayson; a special niece, Rowetta Webb; his best friends, Bruce McGlone and Jody Bradley; his dedicated caregiver, Cassie Woodrow; his faithful protector, Simon; and a host of friends and extended family who will deeply miss him.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the Malone Funeral Home, with Bro. David Boggs officiating. Burial will follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East, where John will be honored with military rites. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the service hour on Tuesday.
